I want you to think of the last business, personal development or thought leadership book you read that made an impact on you or your business…
Now, I want you to think back to how you heard about or discovered the book…
Do you think the author started thinking about their marketing strategy the week before publication? A month before? Two months before?
I’m willing to bet that most of the books that have made an impact on you had marketing plans six months or more before they were published. They were sent for reviews. They assembled a street team, wrote swipe copy for them and developed a timeline for deployment. They pitched reporters, podcast hosts, bloggers, TV shows and event organizers. They built out preorder bonuses and landing pages. They wrote emails and social media posts and scheduled them out.
Established thought leaders and celebrities can sometimes get away with less and launch a book quickly to an existing audience, but they’re the exception, not the rule. And mostly, they still go through the same process for marketing except in rare instances.
So, ask yourself why you’re rushing your book. You’ve put in the time and effort to write the book…why aren’t you putting in the time and effort to ensure it gets in people’s hands…to ensure it makes an impact.
It doesn’t matter how good your book is if no one knows it exists.
