The Power of Persistence in PR: Why Follow-Ups Matter

The Power of Persistence in PR: Why Follow-Ups Matter

In the world of public relations, persistence often makes all the difference. While some pitches may yield immediate results, others require a steady stream of follow-ups to break through the noise. Our recent experience with landing media coverage serves as a prime example of this concept.

Setting the Stage: The Initial Pitch

Last summer, we pitched a local writer about covering our client’s story—her newly released book and her ties to the community. We booked a July interview that the reporter then asked to reschedule for August so that it was closer to the book launch date. Perfect!

Silence and Resilience: The Follow-Up Journey

After the interview, we wondered when the article would be published. Despite initial interest, the writer went silent. Undeterred, we continued to follow up, recognizing the value our client’s story could bring to their publication.

Sometimes reporters get busy and move onto other stories, so there’s a delicate balance between being professional and being obnoxious in requesting updates. The writer occasionally gave reasons for the delay and then suddenly stopped responding. We thought the story had been spiked without explanation.

The Turning Point: Persistence Pays Off

Months passed, and just when it seemed like our efforts might have been in vain, we received a response to a follow-up email highlighting an upcoming event featuring our client and other local authors. That final reachout with a timely event is what encouraged the writer to finally publish the story, all thanks to Guide My Brand’s and our client’s persistence in following up.

The article went live in January – seven months after our initial reachout! Of course, Guide My Brand was busy seeking other opportunities and landing high-profile coverage in the meantime.

This experience serves as a reminder that PR is indeed a long game. It’s a journey that requires patience, resilience, and above all, persistence. While the results may not always be immediate, staying committed to your goals and consistently reaching out can eventually lead to success. (But don’t overdo it!)
