Do You Spend Enough Time Working “On” Your Business Instead of “In” It? Here’s How Publicity Can Help

differnt.I recently attended an ENRG Meeting with other local business owners in my area. Never heard of an ENRG group before? That’s okay, me neither!

Basically, ENRG chapters provide a space for business leaders to collaborate, share insights, and grow together. They allow you to channel the wisdom of others like you who have “been there, done that” to help strategize solutions to the biggest challenges your business faces. And guess what? You likely have feedback for something they’ve encountered as well.

It was incredibly valuable, and I do suggest you check it out, but what really stuck out to me was setting the intention to work “on” your business, rather than just “in” it.

Entrepreneurs Can Get Off Track

If you are anything like me, sometimes we are so bogged down by serving our clients well that we neglect our business. But it’s just as important for continued growth and relevancy to make sure we are working just as hard to level-up our business as we do to serve our clients. It’s what helps us expand our message to reach and help more customers.

It can be uncomfortable to reach beyond what you are used to, but publicity is part of working “on,” not “in,” your business. Publicity can help you widen the reach of your thought leadership. You might be well known in your community, but by reaching beyond your current audience, you tap into a world of new customers and opportunities.

Here are 4 top signs to explore the possibility of hiring a publicist:

You Want to Scale Your Business
Business is good. You’re well known and connected in your community, but you’ve grown as much as you can with your current audience. It might be time to start sharing the knowledge you have with new audiences that reach farther. It will help you expand your offerings and will create new revenue streams to expand your team and scale your business.

🚀 You are Launching a New Product or Service
If you’re launching a new product or service, it’s likely that earned organic PR can help you get the word out quicker than word of mouth – and potentially in a more budget-friendly way than advertising. A publicists job is to package and offer your expertise to media outlets who find value in sharing it with their audience. The result? Media hits help legitimize what you are doing. You can tell people all day long how great your work is, but to have a media outlet highlight that? It’s on a different level.

🎤 You Want to Launch a Speaking Career
A lot of entrepreneurs reach a point where they’ve been successful but are ready to take things to the next level . They want to  share their knowledge with other people through public speaking. Working with a publicist is a great way to start. Before hire you, they want to see what else you’ve done. They want to see which platforms have highlighted your ideas. A publicist can help you build that important foundation.

📈 You Need More Leads
We all go through busy and not-so-busy seasons. The great news is that by doing podcast interviews or writing an article for an online publication, you’re keeping new content  in the pipeline. You’re reaching new audiences who may be interested in learning more. It can be a bit of a long tail, but you are consistently getting your name and business out there, and it does make a difference.

I’ve listed 4 reasons, but in reality there are many more. I had someone in my networking group describe PR as giving your business a “glow up.” It gives you the ability to share your knowledge, increase your visibility, and leverage your products and services in new ways.
