3 tips for using HARO to get publicity

HARO for authors and entrepreneurs, pitching for media coverage

Are you curious how HARO (Help A Reporter Out) can help you get publicity for your business?

HARO can be a great way to get quotes and features in major publications!

Here are some key tips to get accepted by the reporter you’re pitching:

Stand out in your subject line. Don’t simply say “Responding to HARO request” or something generic. Say something like “Doctor with thyroid cancer weighs in on harmful ingredients in skincare products.”

Respond fast! Even if the deadline isn’t for a day or two, I can tell you as a journalist who has used HARO (and a publicist who has pitched hundreds of times), they take the first few people who respond that are a good fit. They’re on a deadline and have other pieces to write. You need to get your response in ASAP.

Give them quotes they can copy and paste from your email and use without having to send you questions or schedule an interview. Also remember to tell them how you’d like to be titled. (Then watch for their piece to publish, because some of them are bad about not telling you they decided to use you in the piece.)
